The Last of August by Brittany Cavallaro

The Last of August by Brittany Cavallaro; 315 pages

Summary:

Watson and Holmes are at it again. Returning home for Christmas, Charlotte is dismayed when her uncle departs abruptly in a manner that is uncharacteristic of himself. With her uncle gone and her mother seemingly poisoned, Charlotte and Jamie go off to Berlin to figure out which Moriarty is behind the crime.

My thoughts:

While I thought the first one was better it wasn’t by much. I thought this book was a very solid sequel to a very good first book.

I absolutely loved the way the book started. It was fun to meet the Holmeses and learn about the family that raised Charlotte. Jamie was the same lovable character her was in the first book. Charlotte was the same eccentric hot mess. And I really enjoyed the introduction of a new character to the story, don’t worry no spoilers.

I also really enjoyed the crimes in the book, and yes, crimes as in plural. Charlotte’s mother has been poisoned, her uncle is missing, and to top it all off they go off investigating the forgery ring that her uncle was looking into! There was so much going on but not in a bad way. At least not in my opinion because it all ties together in the end. I also liked that this happened while they were on Christmas break and not while they were at school because that would have gotten pretty old, pretty fast.

I can’t wait to see what is in store for us next!
